iLRN's State of XR & Immersive Learning Project involves a Delphi-inspired environmental scanning and forecasting exercise in the vein of the well-known Horizon Report series (previously published by the New Media Consortium). Each year educatorseducation leadersresearcherstechnologistsand others representing diverse learning sectors and contexts are selected to join an esteemed global panel of expertsand invited to contribute their perspectives and research on applications of XR and immersive learning technologies. Their discussions and deliberations over the course of several months serves as the springboard for the production of an official reportpublished under a Creative Commons license by the Immersive Learning Research Networkthat showcases the findings. The inaugural edition of The State of XR and Immersive Learning Outlook Report was published in Summer 2021. We plan to move toward a more opencrowdsourced model for identifying/scanning for and also vetting relevant research studiesprojectscases/exemplarsresourcesetc. rather than relying on a singlecentralized model.

2022 State of XR & Immersive Learning Project

a Scanning & Forecasting Effort of The Immersive Learning Research Network

The 2022 State of XR & Immersive Learning Expert Panel has convened!

Our FIRST State of XR and Immersive Learning Report published May 2021 is being used in institutions around the world for strategic planning and teaching. The exemplars have provided direction for institutional projects and research, as well as the text included in many undergraduate and graduate workshops and courses in design, instruction, media, the arts, administration, the sciences, and teacher education and professional development.

The process has been revised to better include Expert Panel feedback for greater engagement and a faster pace. Round two is now redesigned to include both synchronous meetings and asynchronous work and optional times for networking and learning about each other’s work. The Expert Panel now also has a location on the iLRN Virtual Campus in the State of XR & Immersive Learning Lighthouse, where expert panelists may choose to meet, collaborate, share their findings with the broader iLRNetwork and, if they wish, to set up an office or meeting space of their own.

The work on the 2022 Report commenced with a kick-off and the first of periodic expert panel working sessions to be held throughout the Spring 2022. The executive summary of the 2022 Report will thus, be co-produced by the Expert Panel and released at the 8th Annual iLRN Conference in May. The full featured report will be released in Fall/Winter 2022.

The Expert Panel Forecasting Working Groups. Following on the premise of this Delphi-style, future focused effort, we will continue to frame the work in the three main research questions. For each research question, panelists will be able to choose to participate in one of the synchronous sessions and also contribute asynchronously during the specified timeframe. The panel is working through these three research questions based on a preset schedule provided to the panel, culminating in the vote of final emergent categories in April 2022. Panelists are also encouraged to participate in the Immersive Learning Showcase hosted annually during the iLRN Conference on the virtual iLRN Campus.

During summer 2022, the panel will continue writing the full-featured report with opportunities for the expert panels to provide exemplars. The final report will be released in Fall/Winter 2022.

Member and Network Scanning opportunities

A Call for Ongoing & Persistent Network-wide Scanning

Things are moving fast RIGHT NOW. The complexity and fast-paced nature of the evolving future for learning technologies is simply unprecedented. We encourage all iLRN members, partners, and iLRN Houses, Chapters, and Initiatives to actively contribute to the scanning and contributing to the dialogue as part of a network-wide effort to give definition & contour of the emerging future by sharing news, articles, and trends pieces that they find in a variety of ways. Such scans provide professionals, students, and aspiring innovators a window on changes relevant to the nascent immersive learning industry. Your scanning contributions are needed and we truly value our community's ability to stay on the crest of these dynamic areas - you're the professionals! But we're looking to combine our intelligence for the betterment of our expert discipline and improve learning, everywhere.

#StateOfXR + keywords

Please Use the hashtag #StateOfXR accompanied by #hashtags related to the trend or area of impact the news article is associated with:

e.g. a new article about an innovative haptic interface for museum visitors might be #StateOfXR #Museums #Haptics

Be A Lighthouse Keeper: All iLRNetwork members are encouraged to contribute to the scanning, dialogue and reporting of emerging trends and learning technologies related to Immersive Learning. You can be a "Lighthouse Keeper" by participating in dialogues & work sessions held in the iLRN State of XR & Immersive Learning Lighthouse on the iLRN Virtual Campus (and in Discord!) to discuss, debate, and draft propositions and theories of emerging trends by using #StateOfXR tagged and other recent news media. Lighthouse Keepers generate their contributions and, those that are approved, constitute their own stream of iLRN State of XR Media.

Watch for Lighthouse News here on the iLRNetwork Hub for future-focused Lighthouse Keeper work sessions and events by throughout the year.

The State of XR and Immersive Learning Report is the product of a Delphi-inspired environmental scanning and forecasting effort using tools and resources for grounding emergent findings in research and practice-based contexts. The report is a snapshot of the current and emerging state of possibilities for learning using the new capabilities in immersive learning environments.

While no contribution guarantees a mention in the finished publication of the State of XR and Immersive Learning Report, we look to capture and report on the relevant Immersive Learning news & make it available to our membership for discussion and use in advancing your career as a professional in the field. We pledge to do our best to celebrate your contributions by associating your name and quoted ideas and synthesis of events into trends wherever possible across the network's publications and media.
